UTSA Athletics Honored by Sports Video Group and College Sports Communicators

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Athletics has been recognized for its outstanding storytelling and communication efforts during the 2024-25 academic year. The UTSA Athletics strategic communications team has shared more than 100 detailed stories about Roadrunner student-athletes across various media platforms. This work supports the important mission of highlighting student-athlete experiences and helping them build their personal brands.

This week, UTSA Athletics earned honors from two respected organizations: Sports Video Group for the 2024-25 season and College Sports Communicators for the 2024 calendar year.

Four videos created by the UTSA Athletics team were named finalists for the 2025 Sports Video Group College Sports Media Awards. A panel of judges will select the national winners, who will be announced at the SVG College Summit in Atlanta on May 28.

Two videos were finalists in the Outstanding Social Media Collegiate Athletics Championship category. These include the creative reveal of the UTSA soccer team’s black jerseys before their game at Toyota Field against UIW, produced by Jake Rosas, and the Homefield apparel launch video. The launch video, produced by Rosas and Dylan Trevino with help from Jacob Hernandez and Katie Meyers, helped UTSA become the top-selling school in Homefield’s Summer 7 launch collection of 2024.

Two other videos were finalists in the Outstanding In-Venue Video Collegiate Athletics Championship category. These were the 2024 UTSA Football Intro Video, produced by Rosas, and the 2024-25 UTSA Men’s Basketball Intro Video, produced by Trevino.

For the second year in a row, UTSA staff will present a panel at the SVG College Summit. This year, Director of Sports Production Elliott Greisen, Production Assistant Aaron Magill, and Assistant Athletics Director for Creative Services Katie Meyers will lead a discussion titled “Inside the Control Room: UTSA’s New ESPN+ Live Production Facility” on May 28 in Atlanta. Last year, Meyers participated in a panel about new technologies enhancing live broadcasts.

In addition, three stories written by Sean Cartell, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications, were honored by the College Sports Communicators Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest. His district winners will move on to the national competition, with winners announced later this month.

One story, a profile of former UTSA Track & Field athletes Marissa and Melody Espinoza and their inspiring journey through teenage abuse, won Best in District 6 – Athlete Profile. Another, a feature on UTSA supporter Patty Espenhover and her fight against stage-four breast cancer, was named Best in District 6 – General Feature/Blog. A third story spotlighted former UTSA track & field athlete Darryl Wyrick and his legacy of creating a student-athlete stoll for Roadrunner graduates, earning District 6 Runner-Up – Historical Feature.

On a national level, Cartell serves as the Vice Chair of the College Sports Communicators Advocacy Committee, representing UTSA.
