Jason Kelce is speaking openly about the weight loss journey he has experienced since retiring from the NFL in March 2024.
The 37-year-old former Philadelphia Eagles center revealed on the May 14 episode of his podcast, New Heights, with his brother Travis Kelce, that he has lost about 25 pounds over the past year.
“I’m about 270 right now, I think,” Jason told his brother, who is 35 and plays tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.
“270? That’s what I played last year. You could play tight end,” Travis joked.
“No, I can’t. My ankles, knees, and back won’t let me. It’s getting bad,” Jason replied. “I don’t know if it’s because when you retire mentally, your body retires physically, too. I try to lift weights, but I keep straining muscles.”
In a TikTok interview with Us Weekly on May 13, Jason also discussed his weight loss goals. He said he does not want to get below 250 pounds.
Jason’s updates come less than two months after he mentioned on the March 26 episode of New Heights that fellow NFL retiree Beau Allen reached out to challenge him to a weight loss competition. Allen suggested they compete for three months to see who could lose the most body fat while gaining muscle.
To prepare for this challenge, Jason took a body composition scan. The results surprised him.
“There is a lot of fat in there!” he said, calling it “kind of embarrassing” to see his body broken down like that.
At that time, Jason weighed just under 277 pounds. The scan showed he had 207 pounds of muscle and 58.7 pounds of fat, which is exactly 21% body fat.
“That’s a lot of fat,” Jason said, while Travis laughed.
Jason first opened up about losing weight in a GQ interview published in June 2024. He revealed he had already dropped 18 pounds—from 295 to 277—since retiring.
“I don’t want to get too small,” he said. “A lot of offensive linemen lose too much weight. Then they look like bobbleheads because their necks shrink, but their heads stay the same size.”
His goal was to reach between 250 and 260 pounds.
“For me, 250 to 260 pounds feels like the right size,” Jason explained. “I want to look big enough to be happy with my body, even if I don’t have a six-pack. I want to keep some stature.”
He admitted losing nearly another 20 pounds is hard to imagine. But he said, “My back already feels better. My knees already feel better. Losing more weight should help me be more active, especially playing with my children.”
