On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, more than 50 people gathered at the Royal Canadian Legion, Dunsdon Branch #461 for the ELVISize, Salute to the KING event.
Earlier this year, Joan Minnery and Christine Wallace created a new program called CROONERcize. It combines singing and movement to encourage exercise in a fun way.
The event happens once a month. It aims to get people moving and also raise money for the local legion. Since January, they have raised $1,581.50.
Wallace explained, “We wanted to start the year with a health and wellness event. It would help people get moving. The first event had a great turnout, and people asked Joan to do it again. So, we decided to host it every month.”
Minnery added, “Our first event was called Stayin Alive in ‘25. In February, we held Hearts in Motion, and in March, we did Retro Flower Power. That event was fun because it featured 1960s music, and many people dressed as hippies.”
The latest event honored Elvis Presley, the king of rock and roll. Many participants wore Elvis shirts and 1950s-style outfits.
During the evening, Minnery led the group in clapping, swaying, and singing along to Elvis classics like “Jailhouse Rock,” “All Shook Up,” “Polk Salad Annie,” and “Kentucky Rain.”
Minnery said, “It is a workout, but we sing and dance. I keep the moves simple so everyone can join in. It’s not like hardcore Zumba, line dancing, or aerobics. It’s more about easy movement with a bit of those styles mixed in. Usually, we do three songs, then take a break. I talk about motivation while people catch their breath before the next three songs.”
She continued, “It’s a full-body workout, but people don’t realize it. While they think they are just singing, they are using energy and getting a good workout. Some say they sweat a lot even though they don’t move as much as usual. That’s because singing is the key. That’s why we call it CROONERcize.”
Long-time friends Debbie Cross and Jackie Haigh attended for the second and third time. They enjoy moving their bodies while having fun.
Cross said, “Jackie invited me to the 60s event, and I felt inspired to keep moving afterward. I even told Jackie I wished it happened again because it was worth it. I’m a teacher, and I worked outside all day at track and field. Even though I was tired, I’m glad I came. I feel refreshed.”
She added, “Joan tells us we don’t have to follow the steps exactly. We can move to the music in our own way. Nobody cares if you do it right or wrong. We all laugh and have fun doing our own thing.”
The event also featured a 50/50 raffle, a small prize draw, and a door prize. The prize was a VIP package with tickets to see Ginger Alden, who was engaged to Elvis when he died in 1977. Alden will perform live in Hamilton on July 12. Minnery will be the master of ceremonies for that event.
The next CROONERcize event will have a country music theme. Minnery said, “It will be on Tuesday, June 24. Entry is five dollars per person. Everyone is welcome to come out!”
