LP Fitness has partnered with the Autism Family Network to launch workout classes designed specifically for people with special needs.
Liza Mendoza-House, owner of LP Fitness, shared that the idea began while training a client whose son has autism.
“Many people think they can’t come to gyms like this because they feel ‘different’ or have never worked out before,” Liza said. “But that’s not what we’re about. We welcome everybody — and anybody.”
This commitment to inclusion is where people like Grace Meints have found a sense of community.
“I feel excited, and I volunteer here too,” said Grace. “I say hi to people and watch them work out.”
Grace was born missing about a quarter of her brain, including areas that control speech and movement. Now, at 22 years old, she moves, talks, and enjoys greeting gym members with high-fives.
Liza and her sister, Felicia Mendoza, explained that Cathy Martinez, president of the Autism Family Network, inspired the inclusive classes. Cathy had been searching for safe and supportive fitness spaces for her son. That led to the creation of these specialized sessions.
Cathy’s son and Grace both participated in the first class, which included exercises like squats, punching bag pushes, battle rope slams, and weightlifting, all adapted to support individuals with special needs.
“We focused on form and made sure everyone was comfortable,” Felicia said. “They were really excited to try it.”
Grace said she is looking forward to future classes.
The next session is scheduled for Sunday, June 8. There are only 10 spots available for the $20 class, so interested participants should sign up soon.
