A set of dumbbells once sold at Costco is now being recalled.
Johnson Health Tech Trading and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the voluntary recall of the BowFlex 552 adjustable dumbbells on Thursday. This is because the weight plates can come loose from the handle during use. This creates a risk of injury.
The recall also includes BowFlex 1090 adjustable dumbbells. These were sold at Costco, Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and online through Amazon and BowFlex’s website.
According to the CPSC, nearly 4 million units are affected. A full list of the recalled models and serial numbers is available online. The CPSC said BowFlex Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2024. Johnson Health Tech Trading agreed to offer a remedy for the 552 and 1090 dumbbells sold before May 2024.
So far, Johnson Health Tech Trading and Nautilus have received almost 350 reports of weight plates coming loose. These incidents caused at least 111 injuries. Injuries include concussions, cuts, broken toes, and bruises, the CPSC said.
People who bought BowFlex 552 dumbbells from Costco should stop using them immediately. They can return the dumbbells to the store for a full refund. Customers who bought recalled dumbbells from other stores should contact Johnson Health Tech Trading Customer Support. The support team is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT.
For dumbbells sold by BowFlex Inc. (formerly Nautilus Inc.), customers can request a prorated voucher and a one-year membership to JRNY digital fitness, the CPSC said.
