Nearly four million dumbbells have been recalled after more than 300 complaints, including over 100 injury reports, were filed against the product.
Users reported injuries such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes, and contusions from using the equipment, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The recalled items are the BowFlex 552 Adjustable Dumbbells (up to 52.5 pounds) and BowFlex 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells (up to 90 pounds). These dumbbells are sold at Costco for over $800, usually bundled with a fitness stand and bench. Around 3,844,200 units, made in China, are currently in use.
Johnson Health Tech Trading, the manufacturer, said it received multiple reports of the dumbbells “dislodging during use.”
The dumbbells’ model and serial numbers are on a sticker at the bottom of the plastic tray.
The company urges customers to stop using the dumbbells immediately. Owners should seek a refund or voucher. The equipment is also sold at Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Amazon. Johnson Health Tech Trading is contacting all known buyers directly.
Some customers expressed frustration about the recall.
One user complained, “You want me to send the bases and handles of my 1090s, but I have to get rid of 180 pounds of plates myself. Then, you offer only $20 off the $799 weights I can no longer use? That sounds like a plan made by someone who went to Yale or Harvard.”
Another wrote, “Your recall is a joke. Forcing consumers to choose between losing money or risking their safety is unfair.”
Customers can check if their dumbbells are included in the recall on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
The CPSC also noted, “BowFlex Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2024. Johnson Health Tech Trading has agreed to provide a remedy for the recalled dumbbells sold by BowFlex Inc. before May 2024.”
Consumers who bought the dumbbells from BowFlex can request a prorated voucher refund and a one-year JRNY digital fitness membership.
