Fort Bragg has introduced a new workout space at the Hercules Physical Fitness Center, designed for parents to exercise while keeping an eye on their young children. The “Parent and Tot” area, which opened on May 21, 2025, is specifically for parents with kids aged six and under, offering a convenient solution for those looking to stay fit without the need for childcare.
Toni Cayruth, who helped design the area, explained the idea behind the space. “A lot of parents try to exercise while also watching their children,” she said. “We often see moms walking the track with strollers or doing workouts on the basketball court with their kids nearby. This new space offers them a safe place to get a full workout while their kids play.”
The workout area is divided into two sections: one for parents and the other for children. The parent side is equipped with cardio machines, including a rower, assault bike, and treadmill, as well as strength training equipment like squat racks, benches, dumbbells, kettlebells, and exercise balls. There’s also a bench and a stretching chair for added comfort.
On the children’s side, amenities include play tables, a play sink, an oven, and couches—all provided by Child and Youth Services. A cubby divider and a gated door frame separate the two areas, ensuring the safety of children while parents focus on their fitness routines.
The space is available to active-duty military members, their spouses, and Department of Defense civilians with children under six. It operates during the regular hours of the Hercules Physical Fitness Center, with a maximum capacity of 10 people at a time to avoid overcrowding.
Staff members are regularly on hand to maintain the space, ensuring that equipment is cleaned and the area remains organized and safe. While personal trainers are available for hire, the area is designed for individual use rather than group fitness sessions.
Parents have expressed positive feedback about the new facility. Some have suggested adding a TV or more treadmill options, but the room currently lacks electrical outlets. Gym officials are working on installing these outlets to accommodate additional equipment and entertainment options in the future.
“Parents are meeting each other and forming friendships while working out together,” Cayruth added.
In addition to the Parent and Tot space, the MWR’s group fitness program will offer kid-friendly yoga and Zumba classes this summer, making it easier for families to stay active. The Summer Race 5K Series and the Summer Reading Program at Throckmorton Library are also promoting family engagement and physical activity.
Looking ahead, Cayruth hopes to expand the program and possibly add more parent-friendly workout spaces to other gyms at Fort Bragg. For now, the Parent and Tot area stands as an innovative step toward helping military families stay healthy together.
