The Bunker Fitness Center has officially opened in the “Old” Blackwood area of Gloucester Township. The gym took over the building that once housed a Rite Aid pharmacy.
Located at the corner of West Church Street and the Black Horse Pike, The Bunker Blackwood is a 24-hour facility, open every day of the year. It is fully staffed around the clock. The gym features the latest workout equipment, including treadmills, cycles, free weights, and a full Life Fitness circuit system. This system allows for quick but effective workouts, ideal for busy people.
The gym owner, Nick, aims to offer members an innovative fitness experience. He has added two cold plunge tubs, two saunas (which are being installed soon), and a red light therapy room to the facility.
Preopening members have already been using the gym for a short time. However, the official Grand Opening took place on Saturday, May 17.
The news site 42Freeway first reported plans for the gym back in February. This Blackwood location is the second for The Bunker, which opened its original gym in Clayton.
The Blackwood gym is much larger than the Clayton location. Nick is also planning to move the Clayton gym to a bigger space, which will allow for more gym features there as well. I visited Nick at the Blackwood gym to get a full tour.
The former pharmacy was completely cleared out to create a large, open space without interior columns. This layout is ideal for a gym. Nick covered the entire floor with dense padded mats. These mats make walking comfortable and add cushion during workouts.
Nick showed me many pieces of equipment throughout the gym. There were so many that I couldn’t keep up with all the details, but here are some highlights:
Near the front entrance, you will find Life Fitness exercise bicycles, treadmills, and step machines. Nick mentioned that a few more cardio machines are on the way.
The Life Fitness circuit equipment is also near the front. This setup offers a simple and effective workout where you move through stations targeting all major muscle groups.
Along the right wall, mirrors hang above the free weights area. The dumbbells go up to 150 pounds, giving users plenty of options.
Throughout the gym, there are various weightlifting machines that look like they came from a professional sports team’s training room. These machines use free weights and also support resistance bands. The deadlift area is located in the back left corner and features a protective pad.
In the back of the gym, Nick showed me one of the cold plunge tubs. The water is kept at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. It felt much colder than expected, and I’m not ready to try it yet!
To the right of the cold plunge tubs is an open area where the two saunas will be installed soon. There will be separate units for men and women.
The red light therapy room is located near the front counter. This therapy uses low wavelength red light to stimulate cell activity and help improve recovery times.
Gym memberships start at $39 per month. If you pay for a full year upfront, you get a discount—paying for 10 months but receiving 12 months of access.
The gym’s location is convenient, with easy access from nearby communities, Blackwood-Clementon Road, and Route 42.
