GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A CrossFit gym in Grand Rapids honored Memorial Day with one of its most meaningful workouts of the year.
Luminary Fitness began the day on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with The Murph Challenge.
This workout is named after Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in action.
The Murph Challenge includes a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another one-mile run — all while wearing a weighted vest or body armor. Men wear a 20-pound vest, and women wear a 14-pound vest.
“This was a workout he did almost every day,” said Becca Horn, Manager and Membership Coordinator. “Hero workouts often involve something the person did or something that represents them.”
The event takes place nationwide every Memorial Day to honor not only Murphy but all those who sacrificed their lives serving the United States.
“The Murph Challenge is not just a physical test, but also a mental and emotional one,” states the challenge’s website. “Participants are pushed to their limits and encouraged to push through pain and exhaustion, just as Lieutenant Murphy did during his final moments. It’s a powerful reminder of military sacrifices and a testament to human strength and resilience.”
Owner and Head Coach Tyler Cole said that even though not everyone has served in the military, people can unite and support one another through difficult times.
“Not all of us have served, like myself,” Cole said. “But we all face challenges in life, and this workout is a great way to come together as a community, take on a physical and mental challenge, and know that we can overcome it together.”
The day ended with a potluck at the gym. Luminary Fitness provided burgers, hot dogs, and drinks, while attendees brought sides, appetizers, salads, and desserts.
“We’re a larger gym that feels like a close-knit family, and we like to welcome people to be part of that,” Horn said.
