Celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day on June 14 with These Simple Tips

by Lana Green

BRAINERD — Every year, on the second Saturday of June, communities across the country celebrate Family Health and Fitness Day. This national day promotes the importance of physical activity and healthy living for families.

At the YMCA, we believe that strong families build strong communities. We also believe that wellness is a journey best taken together. This June, we invite families to celebrate this special day—and beyond—by joining in activities that promote movement, togetherness, and fun. Whether you want to spend time outside, exercise, or just unplug and connect, there are many ways to stay active as a family without spending a lot of money.

Why Family Fitness Matters

Family health and fitness is more than just exercise. It is about forming healthy habits for life. It also helps improve mental and emotional well-being. When families move and play together, they not only get healthier but also grow closer. It encourages better communication and sets a positive example for children.

Being active as a family does not need expensive gym memberships or special equipment. Some of the best ways to stay fit are simple, affordable, and right near your home.

Free and Low-Cost Family Activities

Here are some ideas to inspire your family this June:

Take a walk, bike ride, or paddle together.

Explore your neighborhood, local trails, parks, or waterways. For example, try canoeing or kayaking at Lyman P. White Park in Brainerd. Make it fun for kids by turning it into a scavenger hunt—spot birds, flowers, or landmarks.

Look for free community events.

Many local nonprofits offer special summer events that are free or low cost. These can focus on nature, fitness, art, and more. Check local calendars to find what’s happening near you. The Brainerd YMCA also offers financial help for programs and memberships.

Create an obstacle course at home.

Use pillows, cones, jump ropes, and hula hoops to make a fun course in your living room or backyard. Everyone can join and try the challenges.

Host a family fitness challenge.

Pick activities like jumping jacks, planks, or squats. See who can do the most in one minute. Track progress and make it a fun weekly game with small rewards, like picking the next family movie.

Have a family dance party.

Play your favorite songs and dance together. Dancing is good for your heart and brings smiles and laughter for all ages.

Garden together.

Plant flowers or start a vegetable garden. This teaches kids about nature, responsibility, and healthy food while keeping everyone active.

Explore new parks or trails.

Make a list of places you haven’t visited and plan weekend trips. Many parks have free entry or affordable family passes.

Try mindful movement.

Physical activity isn’t always about high energy. Stretch together, try simple yoga poses, or practice deep breathing. These activities help with balance, flexibility, calm, and focus.

Build Healthy Habits All Year

Family Health and Fitness Day is a great way to start. But staying active together can be fun all year long. Consider making a family activity calendar or setting goals like “30 minutes of movement daily” to keep everyone involved.

If you’re unsure how to begin, the YMCA can help. Our mission is to support healthy spirit, mind, and body for everyone, including families. We offer many programs like youth sports, swim lessons, wellness activities, and community events to help families thrive.
