Zumba sessions have commenced in primary and secondary schools across Kannur district. However, the onset of rain has delayed the start of classes in several schools. In response, the District Education Office has requested progress reports from schools on the implementation of the program.
This initiative was launched following a suggestion by the Chief Minister to help reduce stress among students. Although teachers were instructed during the vacation to begin Zumba classes once schools reopened, they were not provided with specific guidelines on how to implement the program. In addition to Zumba, there is also a proposal to include games and light exercises in the routine.
While physical education teachers are tasked with conducting the Zumba sessions, many high schools in the district currently do not have a designated physical education teacher.
Scientific research supports the benefits of physical exercise, showing that activities like Zumba boost the production of ‘happy hormones’ such as endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. These hormones improve cardiovascular health, stimulate adrenaline production, enhance blood circulation, and increase energy levels.
These physiological changes contribute to better focus and longer attention spans in students. As a group activity, Zumba also enhances social bonding by increasing oxytocin levels. Furthermore, as a neuromuscular activity, it supports better concentration and cognitive function in students.
