Brooklyn Women Shake Off the Monday Blues with Zumba

by Lana Green

Brooklyn’s Monday routine is getting a lively boost—thanks to Zumba and a community-driven initiative designed to help children in need.

On Monday, June 30, women in the local Zumba class will wear their funkiest socks for a “Crazy Socks Party.” The event invites participants to bring new socks to donate to underprivileged children, combining fitness with generosity.

The idea comes from Brooklyn resident Charlyne Crowe. She encouraged members of the newly formed Zumba fitness class to wear mismatched or quirky socks and bring along new pairs for donation.

At the heart of this initiative is Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) member Chantal Jacobs from Goodwood. Jacobs, a licensed Zumba instructor for over ten years, began teaching in Brooklyn just over two months ago after a successful campaign on social media. Since then, the class has grown rapidly, with over 20 women attending each week.

Jacobs welcomes women of all ages and fitness levels.
“We’re a fun and wild group that enjoys every minute of our time together,” she said. “This class is for anyone stuck in the ‘I hate Mondays’ mood. We want to change that.”

What started as a workout session has become much more. The class now serves as a safe and uplifting space for women to focus on their mental, emotional, and physical health.

“Zumba brings joy. It lifts your mood and helps fight anxiety and depression,” Jacobs said.
“It’s not about getting every step right. It’s about moving, laughing, and letting go in a space without judgment.”

Jacobs is also planning to hold outdoor classes during the warmer months. She hopes the open-air setting will attract more women and spread the positive energy even further.

For Brooklyn resident Debbie Abrahams, joining the class was a life-changing decision.
“After long hours at work and caring for my family, Zumba became my ‘me time.’ It helps me reset for the week ahead,” she said.
“I encourage all women in the community to join. When women come together to do Zumba, it’s powerful. Your mind and body will thank you.”

Stay-at-home mom Jackie Kemp shared a similar story. Before joining the class, she spent her days focused on cooking and chores. She was hesitant to add another item to her schedule—but now she’s glad she did.

“I have more energy and better focus,” she said. “I look forward to Mondays now. Zumba makes me happy. It helps me cope with everyday stress, and I’ve lost weight too. This class lifts me up on every level.”
